Nowadays it is way less common to see people using personal checks.  It may seem to you that the uses of personal checks are almost extinct. However, although the usage has been reduced substantially, there are still many smart reasons why you should still make sure to have plenty of personal checks on hand.

For starters, using checks is a much smarter way of keeping your balances in check. You have a far better accounting of your expenses by using checks over credit cards. When you use a credit card, most often you wouldn’t think twice before swiping the plastic.  Whether or not you have money in your account at the moment, you credit card will do the trick for you and you will be able to make the purchase easily.  When you write out a check, you think twice about it.  Personal Bank Checks You don’t want to cause yourself the embarrassment of having a bounced check. Therefore, before spending the money you are sure to know your account balances.  Also, along with writing the check, most often you write down the check details in the check register, which helps you to keep a much better accounting of what is going in and out of your account. Writing checks does take more of an effort, but it can save you from avoiding debt.  Therefore, the couple of extra seconds it takes will be worthwhile in the long run.

Also, credit cards or even debit cards cannot replace checks all the time.  If you have people to pay that don’t take credit cards, unless you have cash in hand, you will need to use a check.  You can’t swipe your card to pay your babysitter.  You can’t swipe your card to send someone a wedding gift, pay your handyman or pay for the school trip. You can’t pay your friend bag for buying you groceries with a credit card etc. There are also many vendors, such as your utility bills that prefer being paid by check. When you think about it, you will be surprised at how often you still find yourself resorting to the old fashion check writing method. There are numerous tasks that cannot be done with a credit card even in today’s day and age.  You need checks when you can’t use your credit card and you don’t have cash available.

Using personal checks over credit card is also more secure.  For instance should your pocketbook get lost or stolen, someone can immediately make use of your credit cards and even debit cards to deplete your savings even before you can make your credit card company aware of the situation.  With a personal check, even if someone does try to use it, it takes a couple of days for your account to verify the check and release the funds.  If you notify your bank right away, by the time the check is verified, they will know not allow for the funds to be released. Additionally, most checks that you order come embedded with many security features making forging or duplicating your checks nearly impossible.

According to the Federal Reserve, there are still more than 30-billion checks being used in the U.S. every year. For the reason listed above and others as well, it will still be a long while before the uses for personal checks will no longer exist.
